Children's Services

The WRA Children's Center is a healing and safe place for children whose lives have been affected by substance abuse. Children of residential and outpatient clients may receive services here, from infants to age 10.

Located at the Counseling Center, the Children's Center is a bright and colorful environment with toys, crayons, paints, small chairs and tables, and pillows.

The Children's Center provides an opportunity for mothers to attend substance abuse programs and parenting groups while their children receive therapeutic services from child care specialists, including art therapy. Groups include:

Children’s Group

Therapeutic care for children aged five to 10-years old; education on drug/alcohol addiction, feelings exploration, problem solving and coping skills.

Mommy & Me

An interactive, activity-based group for mothers and their children from infants to 10-year olds.

Parenting Group

An educational group utilizing the “Nurturing Parent Program for Parents in Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery” developed by Stephen Bavolek, PhD and Norma Finkelstein, PhD.

Individual Counseling

Individual age-appropriate counseling helps the child to understand addiction as an illness. This can facilitate his or her healthy development and recovery from any secondary effects he/she has experienced as a result of a mother’s substance abuse problem.

Family and Friends

WRA treats chemical dependency as a family illness. In this weekly group, friends and family of clients gather to learn about addiction and about how each person close to the addict is affected by the disease. The group provides education, support and counseling.

Psychotherapy Services

Children are assessed and individual therapy is provided if needed. The therapist helps the child identify feelings and, through exploration, art, drama, and play therapy, provides the tools and guidance necessary to lead the child to healthy self-development.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Intensive individualized treatment intervention that involves training parents in behavioral management techniques within a play-therapy context.
